AFC joined the National Trust for Historic Preservation, Cincinnati Preservation Association, Over-the-Rhine Foundation, and AIA Cincinnati in cosponsoring a design charrette for Over-the-Rhine. The day-long event attracted more than 130 architects, designers, architecture students, and community leaders to the Art Academy of Cincinnati on Saturday, January 19, 2008.
AFC trustee Michael Moose, AIA, and architect Ken Jones co-chaired the committee of volunteer architects. AFC executive director Sue Ann Painter coordinated the architects and served on the charrette planning committee. DAAP Associate Professor Virginia Russell enlisted the aid of her students. The group was divided into four studios: #1. Michael McInturf, AIA, and Paul Karalambo - design suitable for site at 1602 Pleasant Street (NE corner of Liberty); # 2. Steven Hampton and Graham Kalbli, AIA - design suitable for site at 204-206 Peete Street; #3. Andy Corn, AIA, and Don Beck, AIA - design suitable for site at 553 East 13th Street; and #4 Jeff Raser, AIA, and Ty Provosty, AIA - design suitable for site at 1329 Walnut Street Each was charged with designing a residential or multiuse structure or complex suitable to the neighborhood context. Where possible, designers were to use green strategies to create sustainable designs.
The charrette was a popular success. Lay people were able to discuss their needs and preferences, and to interact with one another and their team architects. It was an educational, stimulating, and inspiring day.
The event and an upcoming report were made possible by grants from the sponsor organizations and a gift from GBBN Architects. The Art Academy contributed its fine public spaces and four studios. A grant from AIA Cincinnatis Bettman Fund will be used to publish a report. |
